Marine Services Team Traveled to La Ciotat, France
DEA’s Marine Services team, traveled to La Ciotat, France, for an intense week-long training and certification on the DriX autonomous survey vessel, provided by Exail.
The DriX is a 25-foot Uncrewed Surface Vehicle (USV) that can operate autonomously at sea. It’s equipped with a customizable hydrographic survey payload, advanced navigational instruments, and cutting-edge communication and safety systems.
Jason Dorfman shared, “This was a challenging and unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the DriX system. We are excited to incorporate this cutting-edge technology into the 2024 NOAA project and future Marine Services missions.”
Water Quality Month
DEA’s Nicole Parks and Ashley Tarter, Senior Environmental Scientists and Project Managers, attended an Advanced Wetland Delineation course for Transportation Projects in Boise, Idaho. The course, taught by the esteemed Phil Scoles and offered by the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council, amplified their ability to identify hydric indicators and delineate wetlands in challenging soil conditions. Identifying, protecting, and enhancing wetlands is critical for maintaining water quality in our lakes, rivers, and taps. Take a moment to express gratitude to our wetlands for all their hard work to keep our water clean. Happy Water Quality Month!
2024 Small Business Fair
DEA hosted its annual Small Business Fair in Portland, connecting local small businesses with DEA staff to foster opportunities and partnerships. This event is part of our commitment to supporting disadvantaged, emerging, woman-owned, and minority-owned businesses. By bringing together clients, project managers, technical staff, and small business representatives, we aim to build strong teams for future projects and reduce barriers to contracting.

World Hydrography Day
Happy World Hydrography Day!
In 2024, DEA is partnering with Exail to deploy the DriX uncrewed surface vehicle for over-the-horizon supervised autonomous hydrographic surveys. This effort will gather both seafloor bathymetry and wide-swath high-resolution imagery. The advancements in hydrographic technology are impressive, and DEA is proud to be at the forefront with autonomous operations and innovative mapping techniques.
