Coos Bay Channel Modification Section 203 Feasibility Study/Environmental Impact Study

As larger port authorities reach capacity on the U.S. West Coast, small to mid-size ports are seeking opportunities for economic development by expanding their facilities. In order to authorize the channel as a federal channel eligible for maintenance dredging by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Port of Coos Bay is conducting a combined Draft Feasibility Study/Environmental Impact Statement (FS/EIS) of potential navigation improvements under the authority granted by Section 203 of the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), 1986. The FS/EIS will propose modifications to the Lower Coos Bay Navigation Channel to accommodate larger deep draft vessels while providing a net positive local, state, and federal economic and environmental benefit. The port contracted with DEA to lead the FS/EIS process, consisting of four phases: (1) Public Scoping, (2) Detailed Technical Studies, (3) Draft FS/EIS Development, and (4) Final FS/EIS Development and Approval.
